Time to register for our 2024 WBA Study Weekend in Ritzville Washington.

Monday June 3rd David James will give us a preview via Zoom of what we can expect to find in the area where the ice age floods carved this dramatic landscape.

This is our 25th anniversary and this year’s program speaker is an old friend for many of you and a treat for all of us! Bob Pyle will be our Saturday night speaker and promises to be a delightful evening.

Dinner will be a taco bar catered by Porky’s, suitable for meat lovers, vegetarians and vegans.

Moth night returns this year thanks to David Droppers and his light fantastic. David will scout the area and give us location details when we meet for Friday night registration and socializing.

This year we will visit many sites in this geologically rich area which promises to be some great butterfly habitat. Upper Crab Creek, one of the sites we plan to visit, is a sensitive area, so we plan to have delegated netters to minimize our impact in this special environment. The population size of the Silver-bordered fritillary (atrocostalis subspecies) in Washington is low and considered to be declining. This butterfly is recognized as a WDFW “Species of Greatest Conservation Need” in Washington, so extra caution with this species (and habitat) is critical. Silver-bordered fritillaries netted here will be brought to us for viewing and photographing. We expect to see many other species in this unique area including Viceroys, Garita Skipperlings, Arrowhead Blues and perhaps Ruddy Coppers, as well as other species we don’t often see.
