A butterfly caterpillar instar is one of several distinct growth stages the caterpillar (also known as the ‘larva’) passes through between molts, each marked by rapid feeding and physical change. As the caterpillar eats, its body outgrows its rigid outer skin, triggering a molt that reveals a larger, more developed form beneath. With each successive instar, the caterpillar increases in size, strength, and complexity, developing clearer body segmentation and greater efficiency in movement and feeding. These instars allow the caterpillar (larva) to grow in controlled steps, ensuring that its body can support the dramatic transformation it will later undergo during pupation into a butterfly.
