11/14 – Rare Butterfly on San Juan Island – Nicholas Turner, Seattle Times

This morning the Seattle Times published a long story by Nicholas Turner about the Island Marble which lives on San Juan Island.

This butterfly, found only on a WA island, risks extinction!
Island marble butterflies went unseen for nearly a century, and since they were sighted again, they’ve suffered extensive habitat losses. Their adult life span is only 6 to 9 days, but only a tiny fraction reach adulthood in the wild. Now there’s hope this “super unique butterfly” could rebound, lifted by the community around it and high-tech new research.
